How to Keep Your Skin Healthy this Summer

Hi besties!!! I am back with a new post and today we are talking about how to care for your skin in the summer! Hot girl summer means keeping your skin protected and hydrated, so lets get into it!

1. SPF (duh lol)

Alright, we knew this was coming. Regardless if its summer, fall, spring, or winter, you NEED to wear spf. Ideally SPF 30-50 gives the best protection, and be sure to re-apply every couple hours and after swimming and sweating! After 6 PM, you no longer need protection, so 4 PM is a great time for your last application of the day! For an easy re-application I LOOOVEEEEE the new iS Clinical powder spfs. Don’t forget your lips too!!

PRO TIP: Make sure to re-apply your SPF to the backs of your hands just as frequently!

PRO PRO TIP: SPF IN YOUR MAKEUP IS NOT ENOUGH AND DOES NOT COUNT! If i had a dollar every time I hear someone tell me they use their foundation as their sole source of SPF, I could buy a Prada bag. It is not formulated to specifically be a sunscreen, its formulated to be a makeup product with slight sun protection. Put your actual spf on prior to your makeup!

2. Lighten up your Routine

In the colder months, we tend to gravitate towards thicker creams to give extra hydration, but during the warmer months, it is better to go for a lighter cream. Even if you are oily, you still need some type of moisturizer. Moisturizers re-establish the stratum corneum, your outermost layer of the skin, which protects from harmful pollutants and chemicals and prevents further irritation or dryness. So, opting for a lighter moisturizer is the way to go in the summer!

3. Stay in the Shade and Wear a Hat!

Stay protected, besties. Not just to prevent premature aging, but also to protect yourself from skin cancer. You only get the skin you are born in, take care of it ❤ .

4. Want a Tan? Fake Tan!

There is no such thing as a healthy tan. Any sort of tan is skin damage. It seems to be common for people to try to get a “base tan” in tanning beds prior to summer because they think it prepares their skin for summer. Honestly, there is no safe way to get a real tan. If you want that golden skin glow, self tanner or spray tans are the way to go! I personally go between Bali Body and Luna Bronze for my self tanner. Make sure to shower, shave, and exfoliate prior to applying your self tanner for best results!

5. Cleanse after Swimming!

Chlorine is a chemical used in swimming pools to keep the water clean and kill bacterias. However it can be a tough bitch on our skin. After swimming in a pool use a gentle cleanser and finish with some hydration (Hydracool serum and Reparative moisture emulsion are sooo good and give your skin antioxidant protection too). If it is still daytime, be sure to re-apply your SPF 🙂

Additional tips:

-Laser Hair Removal (and any BBL or IPL laser treatments) generally should not be done in the summer. Your skin can not have any sort of tan (real or fake) or it can cause a burn and pigmentation to the skin.

-Remember to have some exfoliation for face and body! If you are using a physical exfoliation (grit feeling product) only use 1-2 times per week. Chemical exfoliants can be used daily in some cases. Remember that exfoliation does make your skin more vulnerable to the sun, so save the exfoliation for evening!

-If you do get a sunburn, don’t use any acids on the area for at least 5 days. Use hydrating and soothing products and cold compress cloths. Wear loose fitting clothing and don’t pick at the skin. Remember that sun burns may seem temporary, but they can cause long lasting damage!
