Redness & Rosacea

One of the more common concerns I see and hear about with my clients is redness and rosacea. Rosacea is a inflammatory skin condition that is characterized by hypersensitive skin, red rosy cheeks, pimples and pustules. It is fairly common in men and women around the age of 20-50 and is more common in fair skin types. It is unknown what actually causes rosacea, but there are many factors that can trigger it, making redness more noticeable.

Rosacea triggers include:

  • Certain foods such as spicy foods, dairy, sugar, alcohol, and hot drinks
  • Exercise, hot baths, or saunas
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Harsh weather climates
  • Harsh products that damage the skin moisture barrier (stripping products such as alcohol, witch hazel, fragrance, etc)

Some other contributing factors when it comes to rosacea is free radical damage. Dust, smoke, pollution, chemicals, and pollution. (Antioxidant serums will be your friend for protecting our skin from this pesky free radicals!)

How to Treat Rosacea

As with most skin conditions, prevention is better than cure. Your skin is hypersensitive and so it is important to know which triggers are causing your skin to react and avoid them as much as possible.

It is also important to protect your skin’s defensive moisture barrier. You can do this by avoiding irritating soaps and cleansers, and instead switch to calming cleanser such as Cleansing Complex from iS Clinical (This cleanser is great for the most sensitive skin types and will not strip the skin of its natural oils, AND it balances the pH level of the skin, so its a win-win!

It’s also important to avoid harsh exfoliators and scrubs that are irritating skin that is already hypersensitive, and avoid the sun as much as possible and wear SPF every day, remembering to reapply it every few hours.

My more common recommendations for rosacea are:

  • iS Clinical Cleansing Complex as your gentle but effective cleanser
  • Pro-Health Serum to give your skin the antioxidants to protect from free radicals and help soothe the redness and inflammation
  • Shield Recovery Balm to sooth dry, tight, irritated skin and protect your skin barrier
  • Eclipse SPF!!!

I hope this was helpful in understanding the struggle of rosacea. It is a constant and tricky skin condition that will flare up depending on your lifestyle. If you have any other questions at all about which products are right for you, or which facial treatments can help with redness, feel free to send me a message and I will guide you in the right direction ❤

Thats all for now, see you next time!

PS – DON’T FORGET YOUR SPF!
