GUA SHAS… whats the hype?! Gua Shas have became increasingly popular over the last couple of years, and its easy to see why. I am going to break down what exactly they are, how they benefit us, and how to use them.
Okay… so what even IS a gua sha? Gua Shas are a stone (typically jade or rose quartz) that is used as a massage technique that is designed to relieve tension in the muscles of the face, boost blood circulation, and encourage lymphatic drainage to reduce puffiness in the face. It also helps break up fascia, the connective tissue that hugs muscles but can sometimes interfere with optimal circulation.
With origins in the ancient medical traditions of China and Southeast Asia, gua sha is sometimes known as “spooning” or “coining” because of its long history of make-shift home practice. Back in the day, people used to use antlers and horns on the body to help with healing and circulation of the body. Now, there are much gentler and specific tools designed for our face to use this technique.
The Benefits of Gua Sha
- Stimulates circulation
- Helps produce collagen
- Softens fine lines and wrinkles
- Decreases puffiness
- Decreases inflammation
- Diminishes dark circles
- Temporarily tightens skin
- Brightens complexion
- Sculpts facial muscles
- Releases tightness
When using the Gua Sha, it is important to have a facial oil on the skin beforehand to allow the stone to gently (but firmly) glide at a 15 degree angle on the skin. Never use a gua sha on dry skin, it can cause pulling and tugging. I like the Eminence Rosehip Firming Oil or the Hydra-Cool Serum from iS Clinical. I like to use a combination of short and long strokes across the areas that need it (my jawline in particular). Lymph nodes are located beneath the surface of the skin. An easy, feather-like stroke of a gentle facial gua sha technique is all it takes to flush the lymph into your body’s drainage system, The process stimulates lymphatic flow and drainage, releasing excess fluids that can be a culprit of skin bloating. Always remember to drain the lymph down to your neck (trust me, it feels AMAZING).
I have attached a link below that shows the EXACT movements on how to use your Gua Sha. I hope this is helpful to you all ❤
