I live in Manitoba, our winters are COLD (brrrrrr) and YES, the cold DOES affect our skin.
Winter is harsh on our skin. Why? Well, cold temperatures mixed with low humidity levels mixed with freezing cold wind temperatures can draw moisture out of our skin and leave us feeling extra dry, flaky, and inflamed. Additionally, skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis can flare up in the winter months too. So… how do we keep our skin protected from the cold, and how do we adjust our skin routine in the winter?
Honestly, its really quite simple…
To start, visit your local aesthetician. Its important to go for an in-person consultation for your estie to be able to see your skin in person, feel it, and see exactly what it needs. Also, I recommend facials monthly (because our skin cells renew themselves every 30 days or so). However, I understand that monthly facials may not be in the budget for everyone. If that is the case, aim for quarterly facials (once per season change). You would be surprised the difference this makes. It really helps adjust our skin to the new season, and allows you to have one on one time with your estie to make any changes in your skincare routine.
Switch up your moisturizer! This is a big one. Summer is great for light moisturizers, but winters… winters using a heavier moisturizer is going to be your friend. My top recommendation for winter moisturizers are:
iS Clinical Hydra-cool serum, iS Clinical Sheald Recovery Balm, iS Clinical Reparative Moisture Emulsion.
If you are prone to acne and breakouts, a combo my clients love is starting with hydra cool serum first (after cleansing) and then following with reparative moisture emulsion. Layering the moisture emulsion overtop of hydra cool is going to trap that moisture into the skin, and allow for deeper penetration of the serum. (Deeper product penetration = better results).
Additionally, (I know I am going to sound like a broke record, but bare with me) don’t forget your SPF!! Check out my previous post on the importance of SPF in the winter months π
Say no to tanning. I know, we crave the sun in the winter months- but this is just going to dry out your skin even more. Instead, try taking Vitamin D supplements! Vitamin D is so beneficial for our body, but there are plenty of ways we can get it without going in the tanning bed!
Do you have more questions? Do you need help with your skin and regulating your moisture levels? You know the drill, send me a DM on Instagram @lifestylebeauty.kate and I will help you out. In the mean time, STAY WARM!! Damn, this weather makes me want to stay in bed all day and watch Netflix and drink hot coco π
